When it comes to surfing on Long Island their are many factors to come into play. Finding a public surf spot during the summer of 2020 has been extremely challenging due to the pandemic that is currently unfolding. Key things to keep in mind during the your summer travels to new surf spots on Long Island include but are not limited to:
1. Traffic
Due to a huge number of businesses closing indoor faculties people have gone mad during quarantine. The beach is a great inexpensive way to enjoy some nice weather. Or at least that is how it will feel when you wait up to 3 hours to get access to Robert Moses state park.
That said, weekdays you should experience close to zero traffic headed to Robert Moses as people will be working. On weekends if you don’t get to the beach by 9 am be prepared to wait on a long island of eager goer hopefuls.
Overall in our opinion the traffic is worth the wait to access Robert Moses state park.
2. Beach Closure
Robert Moses state park has been limiting parking capacity at all fields during the pandemic. You will only be allowed to park in every other spot when you are at Robert Moses state park. By limiting parking this in turn cause the fields to fill up quicker, causing more field closure than in previous years. Same traffic tip applies to beach closure. Arrive at Robert Moses state park prior to 9 am on weekends or go during the week to avoid beach closure.\
3. Travel restrictions
Beach travel restrictions will only apply to out of state residents and those who have traveled abroad recently. Check local and federal travel restrictions
prior to planning your next trip to a New York State Park.
4. Weather
As always check the weather before heading down to the beach. this may seem like common sense, it is very important. Nothing worse than planning a beautiful day of surfing at Robert Moses. Then having those plans ruin due to thunderstorms and lighting. Checking 1-2 prior to your planned trip will give you the most accurate weather reports.
5. Surf conditions
You ll never truly know what the surf conditions are until you are at the beach in person. A few resources to checkout before surfing at Robert Moses state park on long island are listed below
